There are two main options for stump removal – excavating the entire stump or grinding the stump.
Excavating the stump:
Excavating stumps costs prohibitively more than stump grinding as it is a more involved process. The machinery involved must be powerful enough to grab onto the stump and pull out all attached roots. Depending on the age and size of the tree this can leave a sizable hole in your yard as dirt and debris are entangled in the root ball. Another reason this option is more expensive is because the company will need to bring in a loader truck to remove the stump and rootball from your properly.
Grinding the stump:
A stump grinder removes a stump without removing the entirety of the rootball. The stump grinder has a vertical saw that the operator glides through the stump, turning it into mulch or wood-chips. This makes it a less expensive and also a less invasive option that does less damage to your yard as a whole.
